It's the weekend before finals! I am emotionally, physically and mentally drained and ready for Christmas break! But it looks like I have a stressful 4 days ahead of me. We will just have to see how it goes. I finally finished a semester long project for the campus library I work at. I created a digitally rendered portrait for each of the student staff members for the library bulletin board. Here is a sneak peek of some of my favorites:

Ever since I was a little kid my mother has created a yearly holiday letter for family and friends to keep them updated on our lives. You can check out some online postings of past letters on her blog. They are actually quite fun to read! And my mom is always super creative in coming up with a new style/design/idea for each new year.
But what does all this have to do with my blog and website? Well, two years ago (my freshman year of college) my mom asked me to design our 2012 family letter since I had taken some introductory class to graphic design in High School. I have it posted on here (Go to Portfolio>Freelance). It looks like an iPod playlist. Last year, it was a busy time for me with my arrange of classes and so it didn't work out for me to design it so my mom got it professionally made through Easy. However, this year I made time to help design it. With my mom's writing creativity and my artistic creativity we came together to form a letter based on the Instagram of HONY (Humans of New York) - but instead, Humans of Easton Court. Here is the final design, which I'm pretty happy with the turn out. It will be printed on a legal size of paper. It's finally finished! Remember the sneak peek I was talking about two weeks ago? Well, here is the finished product! It was a long process, but totally worth it because they end up looking so interesting! This isn't the "final image," the final one has some minor alterations including the texture on the background being removed (my professor suggested that it took away visually from the triangles). But this is the file I have with me right now and I am really wanting to post it.
Let me know what you think! Also, any suggestions for a title? I was beyond excited and honored to find out that two of my art professors invited me to participate in the Professoriate gallery opening at Artspace/Lima. My Ceramics professor, Gregg Luginbul, had some of his amazing ceramic teapot artwork in the professor's show and included my stoneware dinnerware set in the upstairs gallery for students. My other professor, Andreas (Andi) Baumgartner had some of his incredible digital encaustic work displayed as well . He included my Ariel Ad triptych piece. The gallery reception was a great experience, my friend Meg joined me and we talked afterward about how "cultured and sophisticated " it all seemed and how everyone was so nicely dressed, sipping their wine, eating refreshments, and talking about art. It was a great experience! After the Artspace/Lima show we headed all the way back to Findlay for the annual ArtWalk. We went to visit Philip Sugden's (another professor of mine) studio in the Jones Building. Phil is a creative, crazy, and all around cool guy. He has some pretty incredible artwork which is mainly based conceptually from his trips to India. Just a random fact about Phil, he has met the Dalai Lama and has given him a piece of artwork! Phil just finished a year long drawing piece, titled, "Virtually Enlightened" including full-fledged working QR code drawn into his piece that works when scanned with a n iPhone. This is piece is definitely thought provoking and incredibly drawn. Being a student who visited him on his opening day, received a free printed copy of this piece. We also toured through some of the other galleries in the Jones Building as well as the Neon Heater. Again, being able to see your own professor's artwork as well as artists in the area, is a great experience! ![]() This iPhone picture of the printed copy of his piece doesn't do his work justice. The precise pen work and conceptual appeal is just incredible! -Abby Its weeks like this week when you really realize how much stuff has to get done in a small amount of time.
My last blog entry was a sneak peek for a current illustration project I'm working on - that project is due on Monday so hopefully I will be uploading that relatively soon. I also just received a freelance opportunity to make a band poster for two of my church friends and their friend back home. They are known as "Theory Expats." Once that poster if finished I'll make sure to post that as well to my blog. Also, exciting things are happening in the art world in and around Bluffton. This Friday is the Professoriate ArtSpace/Lima Gallery opening. It's a gallery opening for professor's work around the area, including Bluffton. There will also be a separate gallery (I think upstairs) where student's work that the professors have selected will be displayed. I was lucky enough to be asked by two of my professors to have a graphic design/digital piece and a ceramic set of pieces displayed in this show! I am beyond excited to check out the artwork of other professors and college students are making! You can check out there super retro website: http://artspacelima.com As well as Lima, there will also be the yearly art walk in Findlay! I will get the chance to visit one of my professor's studios and one of the newer projects he has just finished, as well as the Neon Heater gallery which always has interesting artists visiting. ![]() Our next project involves portraits. So for my portrait I decided to dress up my friend in some crazy makeup, a pleather jacket and to top it off: a wolf hat. Stay posted for the final artwork! Just to warn you, it will look quite a bit different after its finished. P.S. Really hoping she is able to get that makeup off... -Abby This semester I am enrolled in Digital Illustration. We are currently working on and learning how to make logo designs. We first made several designs by following youtube tutorials, but then changed it so it was our own design. Now we recently created a logo design based on a fake business our professor created, Morris Paint Company. Here are the logos I did for both of these projects.
Despite a very last minute change in weather (it went from perfect sunny to overcast), it didn't rain and we were still able to get some good shots! I am actually really happy with how the photos turned out. I posted a couple of my favorites to my photography section if you want to see them. I might also go ahead and post a couple onto this blog as well!
I've finally got around to making updates to my website. I'm feeling like this default background suits my style better than the other one. But who knows, maybe in a couple of months I'll be tired of this one. That seems to be how it works. (:
One of the newest features you will notice is within my portfolio drop down menu. You should see a "photography" section, which I have slowly begun to add portrait photos to from the past several years I've been at college. Something else I've been excited to share is a new photo shoot I have coming up tomorrow! I want it mainly to be a surprise, however, I will share that it will be an engagement session. My first ever! I'm excited to take some more pictures...it's been awhile, since Europe actually (which was at the beginning of summer!) So make sure to keep an eye out for those pictures! And also for school projects and perhaps other random side freelance projects! Thanks for reading! -Abby |
